Reorienting

The goal of reorienting is to bring a patient out of hypnosis, while also maximizing the chances that he or she will bring any benefits of the sessions, including any feelings of calmness and relaxation, into his or her day.

“Now … imagine we’re back in the elevator. As I count from 10 back to 1 … I want you to come back up the elevator with me, one level for each number that I count … and when I reach the number ‘one’ you will still have your eyes closed but they will be about to open. What will happen is that your mind will allow you to open your eyes only when you are fully alert, but still relaxed and at ease. The feelings of comfort, relaxation, and calmness you have been feeling, these feelings will stay for longer and longer.

Let’s begin now. Ten, nine, eight … more alert with each number…. Seven, six … feeling more refreshed with each level of the elevator…. Five, four … noticing more and more how your mind starts to be more alert, your attention more expanded, and your body more and more active…. Three … more alert but calm at the same time…. Two, almost there…. One, your eyes are still closed but they are ready to open when you know that you are ready to feel safe, awake, and more and more alert…. You will notice how it becomes a signal from your mind that you are ready to come out by your eyes starting to open. And when they open, you will continue to feel more and more awake and more and more alert. Whenever you are ready, you notice that your eyes seem to be open if they have not opened yet. As you start reorienting yourself, you start feeling alert and active but at ease and comfortable. [Wait for the patient to be ready to open his or her eyes and elaborate more if the patient does not seem to be more alert yet.] Eyes open, feeling alert, oriented, and active. Fully, fully alert and active, and at the same time at ease … ready to go on with your day, with all your activities….”
